A women-only space
A gender-separated space matters to 95% of women. Only 75% of men said the same.
20points higher among womenWhat you told us, and what changed
We are building for both women and men. A men's facility is in progress now. We are opening the women's studio first, because that is where the need was clearest. The figures below are what changed our plans, pulled live from your first survey as you read this.
A women-only space
A gender-separated space matters to 95% of women. Only 75% of men said the same.
20points higher among womenThe barrier is bigger for women
66% of women name a mixed-gender environment as a reason they avoid or put off a gym. Among men it is 50%.
16points higher among womenWhere they train today
Women train far less regularly than men right now. Close to half, 46%, work out fewer than twice a week, against 24% of men.
22points higher among womenTheir fitness life today
Only a minority of women currently hold a gym membership, and most do not have one today. Among the women who have ever had one, more have since let it lapse than still hold it.
The three features FITRA is built around
Women asked for group classes, personal training and childcare far more than men did. They are the three things FITRA is designed to offer.
Women were likelier to join
91% of women said they would join a space like this, against 84% of men. Women were also far likelier to say definitely.
The amenity women wanted most
Among the most-wanted amenities, women put a prayer area and wudū facilities at the top.
Our location sits about five minutes' walk from the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre. The prayer area and wudū facilities women asked for most are right next door, at the masjid.
What you told us, and what changed
The first community survey taught us:
Gender separation matters more to women than to men.
A mixed-gender floor is a bigger barrier for women.
Women also wanted group classes, personal training, childcare, and a prayer space, more than men.
Therefore, we will start with a women's studio.
These considerations, among others, led us to a women-only studio. More than anything, the decision came from your first survey.
How we get there
A place like this is built one honest step at a time. Here is the road — and where you come in.
Hundreds of women answered the first survey.
So we're opening a women-only studio first — exactly what you asked for. The men's facility follows.
A location we love — the lease is in negotiation.
It's in the works. You help us decide how to run it — the classes, the times, the feel.
Take the second survey→Every woman who comes — and brings a friend — shows it's wanted.
A full studio is the proof that lets us raise the funds for the bigger space.
A larger, permanent home. Once the studio proves itself, we raise the funds to build it, the full space you pictured.
The road only moves because women walk it. Tell us how this space should run — then send it to a woman who'd want it.
